Who is a ‘Dost’?We often get asked about this. Urban Dictionary defines ‘Dost’ as a hindi word meaning “a friend”. At Pregnancy Dost we are building community of the friends who are helping you make your journey from Pregnancy to Parenting a joyous one.
As such Dost is a quite familiar word in most of the South East Asian cultures (this includes, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Srilanka & Afghanistan).
But since we are using this term in our domain name, we feel obligated to give you bit deeper meaning & understanding of the word. Read On if you are ready for a drive through in etymology.
Looking for origin of this word we find that it has Persian ancestry with the same meaning as ‘friend’. Interestingly archaic English also has some lineage to this word and it is defined as below in the dictionary
Dost in English is “Second-person singular simple present form of do” ;
So to take a tidbit from your primary grammar books, one can infer that it was referred toward a person with whom you ‘do’ (things).
Who that would be , of course “a friend”.
Interestingly two languages Serbo-Croatian & Czech interprets the word ‘dost’ as meaning ‘enough’ or ‘sufficient’.
