We all have heard of Ice bucket challenges and hydrotherapy, but there is one lesser known secret of the times, that is the super power of Contrast Showers. We all take showers daily but rarely realize the power that water’s temperature exerts on our bodies. I first discovered about this when talking to an old timer Naturopathist in deep down Kerala, India. He mentioned the importance of taking bath by pouring the cold water on the head and how it impacted sensory veins in the body. He insisted that all children should be given bath this way every day. Researching & experimenting further in to it on myself & my kids, I found that there is indeed science behind taking Contrast Showers.
The principle is simple you start with hot water in shower as normal, but then quickly switch to make the water as cold as possible. Now you continue to alternate between Hot & Cold minimum for 3 cycles to begin with, and finally End with the Cold Water. The important point to remember is the duration of Cold Water Bath has to be at least 1/3rd of the Hot Water Duration within each cycle. ie. give your self 100 seconds of Cold water for every 300 seconds of Hot water. It is very important to end with Cold Water.

Now, if this all sounds like quack story to you hold on before you fire an email at me. There is science behind all this. The earliest evidence of 1797 publication by Dr James Currie of Liverpool documenting the use of hot and cold water in the treatment is one of the early example of this hydrotherapy’s basic usage. Since then many athletes & body builders have practiced this technique and there are many anecdotal evidences of people benefiting from it.
How it helps:
When you first start with Warm water, it starts opening the blood vessels and the blood flushes in to these expanded blood vessels and of the blood on surface of the body wherever warm water is working is increased. Now when you suddenly switch to the cold water, the same blood vessels shrink and the Nervous
system kicks in ‘auto pilot mode’ the sensory signals are sent to rush the blood to save the vital organs from “COLD War” attack and keep the organs warm, so the same blood that was flowing fast on the surface of the body rushes inwards.
Now when you switch again to Hot water, the blood again starts to flow towards the surface back.
What this does to you & your body is much more then what short rigorous work out or an expresso Coffee shot can do for you. In addition the results are instantaneous and sustained.

During my research on this article, it came to notice that Ancient Indian scriptures like ‘BrahmPuran’, recommends doing “Magh Snan” in the month of “Magh” per Hindu Calendar year which is typically month of Mid- January & beyond (winter months in most of India). “Magh snan” is recommended to be performed with cold water before the sunrise. The scriptures describe that taking an early morning cold bath for the entire month gets one immense energy & pleasure in life. So this proves that, in all Cold showers are not an urban myths. Mankind has been harnessing power of contrast showers for thousands of years. Just little something that we have forgotten in our busy daily wranglings of modern life.
