I was aware about importance of breast feeding and so that I was little worried If I will have enough for both or not. Will I be able to make them latch on? Will they be satisfied? How much will I need to eat even after delivery? So all these questions are very natural and obvious for most of the first time mothers.

I heard that, breast feeding is good for mothers too!
Benefits of Breast feeding
Absolutely. It helps with weight loss, reduce the risk of breast, uterine and cervical cancers. Delayed menstruation during breast feeding, more emotional attachment and bonding with newborn & so on.
Will I be able to have enough milk to satisfy my Baby?
Nature has made mother and her body already prepared for this day. Now the question is may be you are taking it too seriously or people around you have scared you a lot by asking you lot of questions for satisfying your baby’s needs. The best way to check the baby’s satisfaction level is regular weight check ups at pediatrician’s office and of course daily diaper output! Next would be when your bay is satisfied, he will cry less and have a more sound sleep.
If your baby cries a lot for no apparent reason or he is having colic, gas trouble, not able to latch properly, having difficulty sucking , then there is a chance baby is not satisfied and you can work upon it to correct these issues.
I still don’t know when to feed my baby?
Newborn Breast Feeding
If baby is completely on your milk during initial weeks, better to latch him every 2 to 3 hours depending on baby’s mood and those little body language. For pre mature babies, it can be every two hours as baby’s tummy size and in take capacity is less. When you feel that baby is feeling cranky or crying, you can try more for breast feeding. Hunger may make him cry or make him uncomfortable.
Normal baby may take between 15 to 40 minutes for feeding depending upon the feeding positions, hunger etc. If baby is awake and eyes are wide open, it will be better and faster, if baby is sleepy or about to sleep than he will be slow with feeding.
Breast Feeding Positions
Which Breast Feeding positions will be the most comfortable for me and my baby?
Yes positions do matter for the comfort of your baby and yourself. More comfortable your baby is, more satisfaction he will get while breast feeding. So try to check which one of below positions is best for you & baby. Try one of the below listed positions with your baby for few days and you will be confident within no time to use one of them the most.

Diet while Breast Feeding
what should I eat while breast feeding? How about Tea and Coffee?
If you were following healthy diet during pregnancy then nothing more is required. In some cultures it is said that certain recipes and certain foods are more beneficial to produce more milk. But those are not research based. So enjoy this period and keep it healthy. If you are vegetarian or vegan, make sure your iron and B12 levels are fine. You can’t blame your diet for your baby’s fussy behavior. There can be other reasons too. Caffeine intake should be lesser than normal as it can affect your breast feeding and sleeping patterns for the baby.
What “Things” Do I need to prepare for the best breast feeding experience?
There are many of products available in the market supporting breast feeding starting from nursing bra to breast feeding pillows to leak proof pads to breast pump and so on….
So you may not need everything from day one. You should buy some of these things in advance for better planning. Based on your experience with breast feeding for first few days you can easily decide what else you need more.
Nursing bra is surely a very helpful tool when your baby is only on your milk. Nursing bra has special flaps which makes it easy access for the baby. Cotton is the best fabric to choose from. The comfort and convenience is great with nursing bra and you can save lot of time too. You can see some of the options Here.
My dear friend Sanjana delivered a beautiful baby girl last week. She was so happy when she discussed her plans for breastfeeding with me. Her excitement for breast feeding & other motherly tasks was already on cloud 9. She called me again after 3 days of trying so hard for breast feeding her girl. I suggested her few tips on breast feeding based on my experience and along with some items to ease her problems; breast feeding pillow was one of them. I checked on her last evening to see how its going. She is so happy with pillow usage, it has made herself and the baby so comfortable with each other, happy mommy feeding sweet little angel. A happy sight that filled my day & life.
Feeding pillow is one of the must have little thing as its benefits outweighs the small cost you pay for the convenience through out your breastfeeding experience. It makes the feeding experience easy. Feeding pillow also helps in reducing back pain as you tend to be always in correct posture using it. It helps your baby become comfortable in many positions. Using the feeding pillow can keep your hands free and even read a book while feeding your baby. You can find a good sized and comfortable feeding pillow like this online: Nina Feeding pillow – Teddy Print Grey
My baby is sleeping; how can I wake him up for breast feeding?
Nature has made babies to sleep while they sleep and awake when they need to be. Based on the research, it is not always advisable to awake baby from his deep sleep for breast feeding. Apply the 3 hours rule for newborn during first few weeks. If baby is not awake by 3 hours, make a calming efforts to wake him up. Rolling him on sides, tapping gently on his feet, touching softly on his back can be useful to awake your newborn without lot of crying.
There can be multiple reasons why you are not getting enough milk, don’t worry. Even a drop of it is beneficial to your baby in every way; so don’t waste it. The more relax & happy you feel about this whole journey of breast feeding, more satisfactory experience it will be for both you & baby! Latching and breast feeding is natural reflex baby is already born with so don’t worry about those challenges. Keeping yourself well prepared and well informed is the best choice.
